Demian Maia poised to be next welterweight title contender
Demian Maia is poised to be the next welterweight title contender in the UFC, after defeating 'The Natural Born Killer' Carlos Condit with a rear-naked choke in less than two minutes of the main event of UFC Fight Night Vancouver, in Canada.
Demian Maia, arguably the fighter with the best jiu-jitsu in the UFC, took Condit down to the ground and searched for the finish, until locking in a precise rear-naked choke and forcing his opponent to tap.
With this victory, Demian Maia extends his winning streak to six consecutive wins and puts himself in the front row to wait for the winner of the welterweight champion of the UFC, Tyron Woodley, and Stephen Thompson.
At the end of the fight, an emotional Maia expressed that he deserves a title shot and thanked all the fans who support him.
With this win over Carlos Condit, Demian Maia equals Donald Cerrone and Matt Hughes in third place for the fighters with the most victories in the UFC, with eighteen wins each.
The first place is shared by Georges St-Pierre and Michael Bisping with nineteen wins in the UFC.
The next event in the UFC will be on Saturday, September 3rd in Germany, when former heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett will face off in the main event.
But before that, this Wednesday, Peruvian fighter Claudio Puelles will have to compete against Bolivian fighter José David Flores in the reality show of UFC, TUF Latin America 3.
