The World Wrestling Council has announced that its prestigious tournament “Gran Prix Internacional” will return after eight years of absence.

This wrestling event, which was characterized by the confrontation between a group of Mexican wrestlers and an equal number of internationally recognized gladiators, was established in 1994 and was held annually (except in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2004) as a direct elimination competition.

Starting in 2002, it changed to a cybernetic tournament format. Some of the prestigious wrestlers who have won the Gran Prix are:

  • Rayo de Jalisco Jr. (won it twice)
  • Head Hunter A
  • Hijo del Santo
  • Steel (Val Venis)
  • Máscara Mágica (the one from Guadalajara)
  • Dr. Wagner Jr.
  • Atlantis
  • Último Guerrero (won it twice)
  • Alex Shelley

It was precisely Alex Shelley, in 2008 and at that time belonging to TNA, who won the tournament, where 16 wrestlers, eight Mexicans and eight from the American company, faced each other, returning the visit after the Mexicans swept the TNA World X-Cup that year.

Having guests from different latitudes made the competition extremely attractive for fans who were always pleased with the high quality of the matches that took place.

GRANDPRIX2008

So now we celebrate the return of this competition, expecting the announcement of the dates and, above all, the wrestlers who will participate. There is no doubt that with the working relationships that CMLL has with NJPW, wrestlers from the Far East will come.
