The mandatory defense of the WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KO) against Russian boxer Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KO) on May 21 in Russia was on the agenda. The fight took an unexpected turn when Povetkin tested positive for Meldonium in the doping tests. Due to this issue, the fight will be postponed, as stated by WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán.
"The WBC is taking the right action and complying with the rules of the clean boxing program for mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin. Our priority is safety and justice, and we will continue with the investigation of this case. But one thing is for sure, the May 21 fight is postponed."
Povetkin's promoter (Andriy Ryabinsky) also commented on the issue, saying that the Russian has not consumed the substance since September 2015.
"Alexander Povetkin consumed Meldonium in September of last year, and at that time the drug was allowed. Povetkin has not consumed Meldonium since January, but apparently there is still something in his body."
Deontay Wilder also expressed his disappointment with the cancellation of the fight in an interview, as he was very motivated.
"I am very disappointed with the situation of Povetkin failing his drug test. Now I won't be able to fight on May 21 in Moscow. I have worked very hard for this important defense, spending 2 weeks training in England to adapt to fighting in Europe." I wanted to give the fans a great show, but we also have to understand the position of the WBC.
"This sets back my goals in boxing. I want to be an active champion and still want to collect all the championships and become the Undisputed Heavyweight World Champion."
It's a shame that the fight had to be canceled, as Wilder was training in England and seemed to be accustomed to the schedule and weather. The incident occurred very close to the fight, hopefully it will be rescheduled soon and there won't be any situations that lead to another cancellation.
