WWE plans new layoffs for the end of May
Last Friday left us with a wave of epic layoffs, almost as many as in 2014, when WWE decided to terminate the contracts of 10 superstars and a referee to complete the pack. Damien Sandow, Wade Barrett, Santino Marella, Hornswoggle, El Torito, Zeb Colter, Alex Riley, and Cameron were the chosen ones this year.
Layoffs usually come at this time, almost always after WrestleMania, in what seems to be a symbolic end and beginning of the season. But it seems that the perfect storm is yet to come. A new "Black Friday" seems to be looming, according to information released by PWInsider. The feeling backstage is that we will see more layoffs, which will likely occur at the end of this month of May, although no specific names have been mentioned.
Who could be next? Ryback seems to be the first and most logical option. His bad practice of daring to speak out against the company that pays him, as well as disagreements in various clauses of his contract, constitute weighty arguments. The gladiator himself has already expressed his belief that he will not renew his contract, as his relationship with the management is getting worse. Curiously, everything happened one day after his match with Kalisto at WWE Payback 2016, where Ryback mocked CM Punk by making his entrance to the ring, which some are already ironically considering a curse for those who dare to mock the "Best in the World". The latest updates indicated that WWE had put all of Ryan Reeves' merchandise on clearance, a regular maneuver in the company.
Another feasible name for dismissal is Adam Rose. In the most recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer insinuated that his departure is only a matter of time. SÚPER LUCHAS also reported the latest on this case a few days ago, showing that the South African has reason on his side. Was his suspension fair? It seems not, and the decision to inform the fans about it is behind the imminent dismissal. The fact that he later retracted and subsequently reposted the medical reports has not helped much if Rose wants to keep his job.
Dave Meltzer also commented that Cameron's dismissal saved another superstar's job. The identity of said wrestler was not revealed, and it is unknown if they could be part of the apparent new wave of layoffs coming up. The fate of the former Diva was sealed with her public defense of Ryback on Twitter, so it is strange that an unplanned exit has turned out to be beneficial for someone. It seems that there is a rule dictating the maximum number of departures for this year...
Ryback and Adam Rose are two of the names I have brought up, but many others have been on the chopping block for a few months and would fit as candidates. Personally, I don't like to speculate or trivialize about people who are on the verge of losing their jobs. But information is sovereign, and SÚPER LUCHAS is addressing this issue with the utmost consideration, as demonstrated by Sebastián Salgado's excellent article on the subject.
