This year Payback took the place of the post-WrestleMania event and did well in its purpose, as it managed to entertain by presenting itself as "the first PPV of the new era", with a card based mostly on the new talents of the company. Of course, it also left some data that is worth reviewing.
Here are the curiosities and statistics of WWE Payback 2016:
- This is the eleventh PPV that WWE presents from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, the last one was Extreme Rules 2015.
- Likewise, of the four Paybacks in history, this is the third to take place at the Allstate Arena.
- The shortest match of the night (for well-known reasons) was Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady vs. The Vaudevillains, which lasted 3:58 minutes.
- The longest match was Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, which lasted 25 minutes and 5 seconds.
- Kalisto, Baron Corbin, Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady, The Vaudevillains, Charlotte, Natalya, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and AJ Styles wrestled for the first time at Payback.
- This is the third defense that Kalisto makes of the United States Championship on PPV (plus one on SmackDown), all have taken place in the kickoff.
- The last time a tag team match on PPV ended in a draw was at New Year's Revolution 2007, when Rated-RKO vs. DX ended in a war between both teams.
- The last time Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens faced each other one-on-one was at NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, a match that ended in a draw when Sami was injured and the match was stopped.
- Kevin Owens remains undefeated against Sami Zayn in WWE with a record of 2-0-1.
- Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens is the first match to headline events in PWG and ROH and then take place on a WWE PPV.
- This is the third consecutive year that Cesaro challenges for a championship at Payback, each year seeking a different title.
- Excluding kickoffs, Cesaro has not won an individual match on PPV since Elimination Chamber 2013, where he also faced The Miz.
- Dean Ambrose has won in every post-WrestleMania PPV he has participated in.
- Natalya vs. Charlotte is the only match that has been held for the NXT Women's Championship, the Divas Championship, and the WWE Women's Championship.
- This is Roman Reigns' first match at Payback in which Seth Rollins is not included.
- AJ Styles is the first wrestler to headline events in ROH, TNA, NJPW, and WWE.
