Carla Suárez loses in opening day at Wimbledon

The canary Carla Suárez, 9th world player and 9th seed at Wimbledon, said goodbye to the tournament on the opening day after suffering a severe defeat against the Latvian Alyona Ostapenko, junior champion at Wimbledon in 2014: 6-2, 6-0, in just 53 minutes. Ostapenko, from Riga, is only 18 years old and is ranked 145 in the WTA Tour list, although she has already won nine out of the 15 matches she has played for Latvia in the Federation Cup. With an aggressive return and attacking, the Latvian assaulted Carla Suárez's second serve on Court 8 at All England, who had clear problems with mobility, defense and recoveries on the high and fresh grass.

On grass, Suárez cannot defend herself as on clay with lifted shots and changes of heights and speeds. Ostapenko's returns (three aces) reduced to 37% the number of points won by Suárez with second serves. That opened the way to a dozen break points in favor of the Latvian. Out of those 12 break points generated, Ostapenko took advantage of six. The Spaniard only achieved one winner compared to the 30 of the Latvian. Here at Wimbledon, Carla Suárez was only defending the points from the third round of 2014, so the defeat is not overly serious for her.

Ivanovic annihilates Xu and reaches the second round

The Serbian Ana Ivanovic, 7th seed, reached the second round of Wimbledon today after winning with a double 6-1, in one hour and one minute of play, against the Chinese Yi-Fan Xu, 176th in the world.

Ivanovic, who was a semifinalist at the London tournament in 2007 and is the number seven seed at the All England Tennis Club this year, will face the American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the second round of the tournament, who defeated the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck on Monday (6-3 and 6-2).
