Shakur Stevenson loses belts as he fails to make weight

The American Shakur Stevenson, who defeated Mexican Óscar Valdez, has lost his titles for not being able to make weight.

Shakur Stevenson loses super featherweight titles

The scale was too much sacrifice for Shakur Stevenson, who on Thursday lost the super featherweight belts of the World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Organization by not making the division limit for his fight against Brazilian Robson Conceicao in New Jersey.

Both will face each other tomorrow in a match that was scheduled at 130 pounds and that would have meant the first defense of both titles.

“I gave it my all. I’ve been professional my whole career and made weight, but my body just can’t make 130 anymore. My health has to come first. I’m moving up to 135 in my next fight,” confirmed the 25-year-old fighter who has a record of 18-0 with 9 knockouts.

Shakur had unified the super featherweight titles

Shakur had unified the super featherweight titles with a unanimous decision over Mexican fighter Oscar Valdez last April.

If he does not make weight, the only one who could take the titles home - if he wins - would be the South American, who since his loss to Valdez had been seeking a way to regain that world title chance.

Robson enters with a record of 17-1 with 8 knockouts and is ready to spoil the unbeaten record of the American.

For the New Jersey fighter, this will be the second division he conquers and leaves, after winning the World Boxing Organization featherweight title in 2019 and moving up in weight without even making a defense.

Among the super featherweights, Shakur defeated Jamel Herring to take the WBO title and he took the title from Valdez in the WBC.
