Council of Sports waits for more information before pronouncing on the crisis

The Council of Sports (CSD) prefers to wait for "more information" from the Spanish tennis players and Gala León, the current captain of the Davis Cup, before pronouncing on the events that have arisen this weekend in the crisis that is shaking Spanish tennis. Miguel Cardenal, president of the CSD and Secretary of State for Sport, returned on Sunday afternoon from a family trip to Amsterdam. Cardenal expected to have in his possession on Sunday afternoon the letter that the players have already drafted in which they defend themselves from accusations that they act for economic and sexist reasons. That letter also already has the support of Manolo Santana, current director of the Madrid Open and Wimbledon champion in 1966, but it has not been signed after the meeting this afternoon at Wimbledon (at the end of which Cardenal was waiting) due to nuances between the male group (focused on the Davis Cup and rejecting the accusations they have suffered) and the female players, who prefer to refer to the overall situation. Men are trying to get the girls to show solidarity with them in the face of these accusations of 'sexism' that they believe are unfair. Technicians like Xavi Budó (Carla Suárez, Paula Badosa), Toni Nadal himself, and representatives like Carlos Costa (Rafa Nadal) also fully support the players.

Gala León allegedly presented her resignation

In this situation, and through various unofficial sources, the information emerged that Gala León would have already submitted her resignation in London (where she traveled on the same Sunday) to Olvido Aguilera, interim president of the Spanish Federation... and also personally to José Luis Escañuela, president disqualified for a month, without Aguilera accepting that resignation. The Spanish Federation did not formally confirm this possible news. Gala León herself threatened to resign days ago, "if that would serve for Nadal and Ferrer to go play in Russia." It was before Ferrer left in London, from where Gala León will also leave on Monday.

"We are not going to be talking every day about any information related to the Tennis Federation, and without any official confirmation or knowing what we can rely on, the only thing that can be said is that we hope for more information about this alleged resignation not accepted; as in the case of the letter from the players, we cannot have an opinion without knowing its real content," said official spokespersons of the CSD to AS. The players are not willing to meet with León, whom they accuse of recording their conversations with them: Toni Nadal revealed this on the radio and soon after, Feliciano López retweeted what Toni had said.

This Tuesday (at 18:00), Cardenal himself will meet with the Territorial Tennis Federations in what could be the first act of a formal motion of censure against José Luis Escañuela, currently disqualified for a month. During this period, it is the vice president Aguilera who has been occupying the position of Escañuela.
