Canelo vs. Golovkin: the fight preview
A vibrant fight was protagonized by 'Canelo' Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin this Saturday night. In the end, the Mexican stayed with the victory by unanimous decision, thus closing the trilogy of the rivalry that started in 2017 and generated a lot of intrigue, until now.
In twelve rounds, the native of Guadalajara was the best. That's what the judges' scorecards said: 115-113, 116-112, and 115-113. There was no knockout, but there were several moments where it was close to happening, especially after Álvarez's hard punches.
"I've been through very difficult moments. We gave the audience three great fights. I will need surgery on my hand," Álvarez declared after achieving his success. Meanwhile, Golovkin anticipated that he will continue in the boxing activity. "I have three belts in the 160 pounds, of course, I will continue," he said.
Álvarez, undisputed super middleweight champion, needed to shake off the doubts that surrounded him since he suffered the second defeat of his entire career in May, in a fight against Russian Dmitry Bivol in the higher weight category of light heavyweight.
Álvarez, 32, and Golovkin, 40, met again in a fight with many unfinished accounts to resolve. The first confrontation between the Mexican, 32 years old, and the Kazakh, 40 years old, ended in a controversial draw in 2017, with many experts declaring Golovkin as the winner.
The second one, held a year later, ended with a victory by unanimous decision for Álvarez, who now wants to apply Golovkin his first knockout and defend his super middleweight belts (168 pounds - 76.2 kg).
