Chile reaches semifinals after defeating the reigning champion 1-0
As expected, the Uruguayan team did not make it easy and thanks to their strong defense they managed to hold on for most of the match. The action between Gonzalo Jara and Edinson Cavani marked the game. It is true that Chile was already dominating before Cavani's red card, but it is also true that until that moment Uruguay was resisting without too much trouble. Uruguay was just ten minutes away from the desired penalty shootout. Isla was the best player of the match and also the author of the goal that put Chile in the semifinals of the Copa America 16 years later.
Peru reaffirmed itself as the positive surprise of the tournament
Few expected, before the start of the Copa America, that the Peruvian team would repeat their historic semifinals from 2011. Ricardo Gareca has formed a solid team that can complicate the life of anyone (as it already did in the group stage against Brazil and Colombia). In the quarterfinals, they defeated a Bolivia team that took to the field convinced that their goal in the Copa had already been fulfilled. Bolivia tried to provide defensive security by adding a third central defender, but the result was bad and they conceded too many opportunities to a player like Guerrero. The Flamengo striker took advantage of the defensive lapses to eliminate Bolivia. Martins scored for Mauricio Soria's team after a ridiculous penalty by Advincula, but the team no longer had time or resources to make a comeback.
Chile and Peru will face each other in a match loaded not only with sporting tension but also political tension.
Sampaoli's team will seek to impose their rhythm, control the ball, and attack with many players. This can become a double-edged sword because, as Peru has already shown on other occasions, they are masters of the counterattack.
Argentina dominated the quarterfinals against an unknown Colombia, however, Martino's team still struggle with scoring.
On the other hand, the role of the Colombian team in this Copa America has been totally disappointing. The "cafeteros" qualified for the quarterfinals by chance, and the match against Argentina only confirmed that this was not their tournament. Colombia presented a group full of renowned forwards and offensive talent, but they were only able to score one goal, scored by a defender (Murillo). Despite everything, they managed to withstand Argentina's offensive onslaught and take the match to penalties. In the shootout, Tevez made up for his mistake in the 2011 Copa America and sent Argentina to the semifinals.
