In a fight where Yesenia "Niña" Gómez from Cancun was surpassed by the right hand and speed of the Canadian Kim Clavel,
the absolute Minimumweight championship of the World Boxing Council changed hands, after the local fighter won unanimously on the scorecards on Friday night.
Clavel won the first world championship of her career
by defeating the Cancun fighter at the Cabaret du Casino in Montreal.
The two boxers exchanged many blows in the first round, but the speed of the Quebecer allowed her to take the lead in the majority of the episodes and won convincingly by unanimous decision with scores of 100-90, 99-91, and 99-91.
Clavel thus becomes the second champion in the history of professional boxing in Quebec after Marie-Eve Dicaire.
The "Niña" Gómez was surprised by the punching speed of the Canadian, who established dominance practically from the start of the main bout with crosses and uppercuts with both fists.
Clavel, who extends her undefeated record to 16 wins with 3 knockouts, adds this world title to the one from the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) that she won in December 2019, and the Silver Minimumweight title she won in August of last year.
The "Niña Gómez Vázquez leaves her mark with 19 wins, 6 losses, 3 draws, and 6 knockouts.
She made four defenses since her coronation on September 22, 2018, when she won by majority decision against Esmeralda "Joya" Moreno, surpassing the Japanese Erika Hanawa, the Mexican Ana Victoria Polo, the Venezuelan Débora "Pantera" Rengifo, and the Juarez-based Mirna Sánchez.
