Provocation of Gonzalo Jara to Edinson Cavani could cost him dearly
The Chilean defender could face disciplinary action from CONMEBOL, which could result in suspension and even missing the last matches of La Roja in the Copa America.
Alberto Lozada, a member of CONMEBOL's disciplinary committee, confirmed the information to the AP news agency. "An investigation will be opened. It happened just last night. They are working now to pass it to the courts. So tomorrow (Friday) we will know," he said.
Thus, even though Jara's gesture was not seen or recorded by Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci, the South American organization has the power to take action on its own in these types of cases, which would fall under the category of aggression, punishable by one to three match bans.
The photographs and television footage could prove costly for the Mainz player, as well as his previous incidents. In 2013, he had already been involved in a similar incident with Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez. In that case, however, neither of them were penalized and the case was closed without consequences.
