Dalton Castle Speaks about his Character in ROH: "Being comfortable with myself and understanding who I am helps me do it more naturally"
No doubt, the man known as Dalton Castle in Ring of Honor caused a big impact since he debuted in the tournament to crown the next promise of 2015 almost a year ago. His unique style has made him one of the most beloved stars of possibly the most important independent wrestling company in the world. So much so, that ROLLING STONE magazine, one of the most prominent print media in the music and pop culture industry, became interested in him and conducted an interview where Brett Giehl, Castle's real name, commented on various aspects of his professional career. The "Party Peacock", also known as Ashley Remington in CHIKARA, received a call from journalist Kenny Herzog at his home in Albany, New York. During the interview, the journalist even compared him to a wrestling legend like Gorgeus George.
Castle's childhood friends weren't cool
"My group of friends didn't drink or do drugs. We stayed up late until we were very tired and everything was funny. We entertained ourselves that way. Sometimes we find what makes us laugh and leads us to who we are today."
Castle's success is equal parts trial and error
"Trial and error - and cosmic coincidence. I've worked hard, trained like crazy, and tried many things. Some have worked and others haven't. Being comfortable with myself, understanding who I am, and representing it has helped me do it more naturally. I was a wrestler in high school and college, more focused on the sport. Now, however, it's more about making fans have a good time. Before it was about winning, now it's about entertaining."
Dalton is Brett and vice versa
"I try to separate my personal life, but the character has a lot of myself. Both personalities go hand in hand. I never try to do anything in wrestling that I wouldn't do as my real self. That decision allows me to avoid looking like a cartoon that could be offensive. It's a very elaborate and absurd character, but it's working for some reason."
If Castle makes you uncomfortable, you're too old
"We live in a business that is evolving and the world is too. If you're stubborn when you see someone trying something new, I don't think you're going to feel comfortable with Dalton Castle's character."
His rivalry with Silas Young was pure coincidence
"The puzzle pieces just fit together and it happened very quickly. It's the classic story of fighting for something that belongs to someone else, in this case 'the boys'. As ridiculous as it may sound, when you read it, that's the story that makes the most sense: Two guys with mustaches - one of them horrible and the other very bushy, but both have big hair on their heads and they want those boys. Who doesn't want boys?""
When it comes to the boys, it was all or nothing
"When I started being the Dalton Castle you see now, the novelty of using the word 'boys' was everything to me. It was a big part of the character, and I didn't want to lose it. For some reason, the word is very funny. It's offensive and adorable at the same time. When you tell someone 'Oh, that's my boy', it embarrasses me. However, when you tell someone 'Oh, those are my boys', it makes me smile."
He mourned his boys with Celine Dion
"I hadn't spoken to them in a while. I've spent many sleepless nights listening to Celine Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On' while crying and thinking about them. Sometimes I would look at the darkened sky and gaze at the moon wondering in that moment, 'Are they looking at the moon or are they under a greasy car changing the oil?'. Can you imagine the pain they might have suffered? They've probably had dirty fingers all the time."
Even Castle can be insecure
"Every night I go out and think 'tonight they're going to get tired of my nonsense'. Every night I go on stage and they prove me wrong, which means either I have the best fans in the world or they have a lot of endurance."
It's a family matter
"My wife Heather has been involved in it. In fact, she's the one who sews my costumes. I hit the jackpot with her. We were already together before I started wrestling, and she calms me down whenever I get frustrated. She likes keeping me grounded and dressing me in shiny things."
About not having caught the attention of WWE yet
"I'm very happy in Ring of Honor right now. I'm exactly where I deserve to be. I don't know what the future holds, but I don't think about anything else because I'll do my best here and enjoy it."
