Finally the wait is over to know if there is a future for the fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. According to the World Boxing Council, there will be a fight, but not until each of them voluntarily defends the Middleweight Title and Interim Middleweight Title, respectively.
This determination came after Saul swore and promised that he would put on the gloves again and fight Golovkin after defeating Miguel Cotto.
Then both Saul and his trainer, Eddy Reynoso, said that if the fight were to happen, it would be at 155 pounds, because they are very good at 155 pounds (even though it is not a weight division) and if Golovkin didn't comply with that requirement, they wouldn't fight.

Even though the WBC had already ensured that the immediate fight for the winner of "Canelo" -Cotto would be against the Kazakh.
However, the organization itself has relaxed its rules and will allow a later arrangement between both teams, as long as each one fulfills one fight of their choice.

The World Boxing Council (WBC), with the full cooperation of the interested parties, announces the status of the middleweight division.

Due to the request of the current champion, Saul Alvarez, the interim titleholder of the same weight, Gennady Golovkin, and their respective promotional companies, Golden Boy Promotions and K2 Promotions, our organization states as follows.
Both Alvarez and Golovkin will have the right to make a voluntary defense of their respective championships, with the intention of maximizing the interest in the anticipated fight. A period of 15 days of free negotiations will be granted after their fights or starting on May 31, 2016. If an agreement is not reached, an auction will be held in accordance with the rules and regulations of the WBC.
In the event that after their voluntary defenses one of them is unable to fight to determine the undisputed WBC middleweight champion, the unavailable fighter will lose their status as world champion or interim champion and the fighter who can fight will be named the absolute middleweight champion of the World Boxing Council.
