The Lightweight WBO Champion Felix Verdejo retains his title
The WBO Lightweight Champion Felix Verdejo (19-0, 14 KO) retained his title by defeating the Brazilian Josenilson Dos Santos by technical knockout in the second round on December 11th. The boxer said he hopes that for next year (2016) his promoter (Top Rank) can get him a shot at a world title.
"The records of my opponents are good. It's not my fault that the fights end quickly. I'm ready for any opponent. If God allows it, next year I'll have the opportunity to face a champion or be the first challenger. We are already prepared. We are waiting for the opportunity."
The fight Verdejo had against Dos Santos was very impressive. It is even hard to believe that he had to undergo surgery in June due to an injury in his left hand. The Puerto Rican said he threw punches but couldn't connect them well.
"I threw jabs but couldn't connect them well. But my hand doesn't bother me. Thanks to God, we are fine."
About his return to the ring, the boxer said he hopes it will be in the first months of next year, but he will leave everything in the hands of Top Rank.
"Top Rank will make the best decision for my 2016 schedule. For me, I want to fight as soon as possible."
Currently, the competition in the lightweight division is quite tough. He still has to put himself to the test to see if his hand is really okay or if it was just because his opponent didn't last many rounds. The boxer nicknamed "Diamond" is ranked #8 by the IBF and currently the World Championship of that organization and that weight division is vacant.
It is possible that Verdejo will have the opportunity to compete for that title next year, depending on how his progress in the ring continues. So far, he has been doing well as he has a very strong punch, good speed in both his hands and legs, and other important qualities.
