The Great American Turkey Hunt
A tip from us: Every time a match is announced with something 'on a pole', it sucks. We're not sure who originally had the idea of having matches with something on a pole, but if we ever find out, we'll hunt them down and stick a pole up their asses. And maybe a turkey too. A bizarre combination? Yes, but actually one with basis. You see, in the last days of the American Wrestling Association, the company tried to generate interest by creating a series of strange stipulation matches, like football matches and 'behind the 8-ball' brawls, which sadly didn't involve guys throwing billiard balls at each other. But one stipulation that did live up to its name was The Great Turkey Hunt, in which Colonel DeBeers and a jobber named Jake 'The Milkman' Miliman faced off trying to climb a pole and bring down a turkey. Yes, a big, fat, raw turkey, just like the one you put in the oven on the fourth Thursday of November. Impressively, this did not revive the AWA, which collapsed shortly after. Maybe if they had used a live turkey ...
In this Thanksgiving Day, WWE presented this week's video in history, remembering the Turkey-On-A-Pole Match, from November 26, 1989, one of the stipulation matches of the AWA Team Challenge Series, which was an idea of Eric Bischoff. In those days, the last days of the AWA, Bischoff, who was a commentator for the company, received a creative position from Verne Gagne, although Bischoff has always denied that ideas like this were his.
