HISTORY
The master plan for Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez is to win on Saturday, and then become a pay-per-view attraction on Mexican holidays, just like Floyd Mayweather Jr. did, earning tens of millions of dollars.
The plan for Miguel Cotto is not as ambitious, but it could be almost as profitable. After reviving his career with trainer Freddie Roach, Cotto envisions other lucrative fights if he defeats Canelo in the 155-pound fight.
Unlike the Mexican, Cotto would have to do it without a world title, having lost the middleweight crown for refusing to pay $300,000 to the World Boxing Council.
"I don't need a title," said the Puerto Rican. "The fight speaks for itself." Promoters hope it speaks loudly as they try to sell the fight, which will take place at the Mandalay Bay hotel and costs $69.95 on the pay-per-view system in the United States. The bout between two powerful punchers has the potential to be one of the best fights of the year, but it can also be difficult to sell to those disillusioned by the boring — and expensive — showdown between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in May.
