Standardizing Betis Football Club's Transfer Strategy
In the summer of 2008, Ricardo Oliveira was brought back from Zaragoza for nine million. A year later, he was sold for fifteen million to Al-Jazira in the Emirates. Since then, no purchase made by Betis resulted in a higher sale.
Both Juan Carlos Ollero and Eduardo Macià made it clear that acquisitions would be constrained by the limited economic power. But since Oliveira, no player has generated a surplus. Players like Jonathan Pereira (€3.4M) and Perquis (€750,000) bid their farewells without a transfer fee. Matilla, who was bought for €1.35M, could leave this summer; Agra is still linked to the club and cost €300,000.
The recent markets have not smiled upon Betis in their mission to generate revenue. Last season, the club only made money from the sale of Nosa Igiebor, and that was only €400,000 when he had been bought for over a million.
The previous season, the only sales were Beñat and Pozuelo, two players who had come up through the club's youth system. A year before that, there was only one sale: Emana left for €4.5M after being bought for 7 million. The club wants to change this forgettable trend.
