Miguel Cotto Receives Special Belt from WBO
Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto was today awarded a belt by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) in recognition of his outstanding career, which culminated in December, and established him as the only fighter from his country to reign in four weight divisions.
"This belt that the WBO presented to me will have a very special place in my home," said Cotto, 37, who won 41 fights, 33 by knockout, during his career and suffered six defeats.
"I always tried to do the best I could in every opportunity I had. I believe that things came because of hard work," stated the boxer from Caguas after participating in a golf match in the southern municipality of Guayama.
Cotto hung up his gloves last December after losing by unanimous decision to Sadam Ali.
His other defeats came against Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao, Austin Trout, and Antonio Margarito.
Also present at the event on Tuesday were former Puerto Rican champions John John Molina, Alex 'El Nene' Sánchez, and Ángel 'Cholo' Espada.
"I have never been interested in being the center of attention or being above anyone else. I have always been inspired by other legendary boxers, and my intention has never been to surpass them," he emphasized.
