The boxer Cristian Mijares assures that complications between companies caused the cancellation of his fight with Miguel Berchelt, which was scheduled for February 10.
Last Wednesday, 'Alacrán' Berchelt expressed his annoyance at Mijares' cancellation for his second defense of the super featherweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC), and said that Mijares lacked respect. However, 'Diamante' made it clear today that it was not his fault.
"I respect the comments of the great champion Miguel Berchelt, all my respect. But I just want to clarify that it was not my fault. I have been preparing since I was notified of the fight, disciplining myself, I didn't have end-of-year parties, I took the preparation seriously," he said.
During the presentation of what will be the year 2018 for Promociones del Pueblo, in collaboration with Cancun Boxing, he asserted that the cancellation was due to "issues beyond my control. It was not that I didn't want the fight, at the end of my career and almost in retirement, to miss out on such an opportunity would be incredible."
He reiterated that his preparation was optimal, as he even weighed 139 pounds in the 30-day pre-weigh-in. "They notified me the day before yesterday that the fight was canceled due to issues beyond my control. That's how boxing is, but I want to clarify that it wasn't because of me that I didn't accept the fight."
With a successful career, three-time super flyweight world champion and featherweight Silver champion, he said that he will talk to the promoters Pepe Gómez and Memo Rocha to find out the reason for the cancellation, "we'll see, but things happen for a reason."
Confident that 'Alacrán' Berchelt will defend his title on February 10 and will remain champion for a long time, Mijares reiterated that 2018 will be the last year of his professional career, so he is happy with what he has achieved, although he would have liked to leave as a world champion.
"I was ready and why not, I was thinking of winning. That's how things happen, I'm leaving boxing happy after two or three more fights. I would have loved to leave as a champion, I felt capable of fighting for it since it's my last year, I said that I would leave at 36 years old and I've already reached that age."
Promoter Pepe Gómez, on the other hand, said that everything had been confirmed since December 18, but then they didn't agree on some situations, "they're dates and agreements that sometimes happen or not, it's normal."
He confirmed that they were looking to have the fight broadcasted on the two most important television networks in Mexico, and doing it at the Plaza de Toros didn't provide the benefits that they will have at the Arena Oasis Cancun.
After completely ruling out that Mijares rejected the fight, he said that they will reschedule 'Diamante' for March 17 and they will support the 'Alacrán' fight on February 10 as much as possible.
