FCF supports Michel Platini's bid for FIFA presidency

Following the Executive Committee meeting, the FCF announced its decision to offer "full support and backing to Frenchman Michel Platini, current president of UEFA, in his aspiration to become the new president of FIFA."

By this means, the country joins Uruguay and Chile from Conmebol, and Mexico from Concacaf, who announced their intention to vote for the former footballer over the weekend.

FIFA will elect the president who will replace Joseph Blatter on February 26, 2016, during their Extraordinary Congress in Switzerland.

Platini could simultaneously preside over FIFA and UEFA. If he wins the elections, he could hold the presidency of both institutions until after the European Championship, which will take place in his country from June 10 to July 10, 2016.

"The Frenchman does not want to give up UEFA. He prefers to have elections. But since there are no elections in FIFA until the end of February, Platini will not start the process until at least March. That would extend the deadline until well into June, already with the Eurocup underway," said journalist Joaquin Maroto from AS newspaper.
