In 2007 they had a very tense relationship, but now it seems that Ron Dennis, CEO of McLaren, and Fernando Alonso are starting to agree.
Both feel a great frustration with the insufficient number of tests allowed in current Formula 1. "I really think that Fernando shares my frustration, which is not being able to test. When you are not competitive, that is a big handicap. It is much more difficult to improve both the performance of the engine and the car," said the Briton.
The Asturian driver has justified on numerous occasions in this season his poor results by stating that for them, every race is a test since they cannot perform those tests outside the Grand Prix. Dennis says he knows that this prohibition is part of the cost-saving plan to make F-1 a more sustainable sport, but he does not agree at all: "Actually, it does not save money since we have to bring many developments for the cars without testing them beforehand. Those developments do not always work well and when they don't, we lose money. So it is a false economy."
"It is more about harming the operation of the big teams than saving money, only the small teams save. In Formula 1, it is not about that, it is about competing, not having more obstacles. And our biggest handicap in F-1 is constantly not being able to test," says Ron Dennis, we don't know if he is more frustrated by the lack of tests or the lack of results.
