Manchester United fans would prefer to see Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea sold this summer to avoid losing him for nothing next year, according to a poll on the Manchester Evening News website. The majority of fans voting in the poll also wanted United to use the money to sign a replacement.
In the online poll, 45 per cent of voters called for the Premier League to sell the goalkeeper this summer and buy another shot-stopper to take the No.1 jersey, while 32 per cent called on United to keep De Gea and allow him to leave for nothing next summer. The remaining 23 per cent voted to sell the Spain international and for United to put their faith in a goalkeeper already at the club.
With just over a week to go before the start of the new Premier League season, both clubs are keen to come to a conclusion over the immediate future of the goalkeeper in the coming days.
With “the threat of De Gea leaving”, United coach Louis van Gaal signed Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero. In addition, the attempt to include a move for Sergio Ramos in any deal taking De Gea to Real Madrid has proved critical in negotiations, although relations between the Andalusian centre-back and the club have smoothed over in recent days.
