CONMEBOL announced a package of measures in order to prevent corruption cases.

CONMEBOL announced a package of measures in order to prevent corruption cases.

One of the main measures to be adopted is the reform of the Ethical Code and the review of commercial relations with investigated companies.

The reform of the Ethical Code will seek to "establish more effective procedures for investigating allegations of misconduct and corruption against officials and executives" of the organization, indicated Conmebol in a statement sent to the ten member associations.

Following the scandal that broke out in Switzerland at the end of May and prompted the arrest of senior officials of South American football and FIFA, Conmebol seeks to "improve anti-bribery policies and business expenses", and to establish "an efficient mechanism" that allows the reporting and investigation of illegal, corrupt "and other inappropriate conduct".

In addition, a Financial Monitoring and Compliance Committee will be formed to report periodically to the Executive Committee on all matters related to the financial movement of the organization.

In the commercial field, Conmebol announced that it will evaluate relations with all entities that, "according to competent judicial or governmental authorities, have engaged in criminal conduct to the detriment of the organization's operations."

An independent consulting firm, with experience in international marketing, will be hired to provide advice in the commercialization processes of South American football rights.

On May 27, among others, Uruguayan Eugenio Figueredo, vice president and member of the FIFA executive committee; Venezuelan Rafael Esquivel, a member of the Conmebol executive committee and president of the Venezuelan Federation (FVF); and Brazilian José Maria Marin, a member of the FIFA organizing committee for Olympic football and former president of the Brazilian Confederation (CBF) were arrested in Zurich.

The detainees are suspected of accepting bribes of tens of millions of dollars and are facing charges brought by the United States Justice Department.
