The Minister of Interior Criticizes Pep Guardiola
The Minister of Interior, Jorge Fernández Díaz, criticized on Tuesday the former player and coach of Barcelona, Pep Guardiola, for joining, in the last place, the independence candidacy in the Catalan elections, accusing him of having played and "succeeded" in the Spanish national football team only for money.
According to Fernández Díaz, anyone can engage in politics, but Guardiola's case, coach of Bayern Munich, seems "quite sad and regrettable" because "you can't have your cake and eat it too," that is, getting involved in politics while simultaneously remaining as coach of the German team.
"We see that the mask is removed and people who have played and succeeded with the Spanish national football team did it probably not for patriotic interest, but for monetary interest, because there are people whose god is money," the minister said in an interview on Cadena Cope, as reported by Europa Press.
Guardiola will be in the last position of the list agreed upon by CDC and ERC for the September 27 elections, but he has made it clear that he wants to remain in his current job and has no intention of becoming a member of the Parliament.
Thus, Fernández Díaz distinguished this case from that of any other person, former coach or not, who wants to engage in politics, stating that it is a noble activity driven by a vocation of public service and a will to serve the common good.
