Serena Williams, world number one, to rest after injury
American Serena Williams, world number one, will rest for a week after withdrawing from the Bastad tournament in Sweden, part of the WTA and played on clay, due to a shoulder injury, but she believes that the injury will not prevent her from preparing well for the US Open.
Williams, who is aiming to win all the Grand Slam titles this year, withdrew before the second round match against Czech Klara Koukalova, after getting injured during training.
"Despite the fun we have had in the past eight weeks, I need some time to rest and allow my shoulder to recover. I am confident that I will be ready for the rest of the summer. I need time to recover and rehabilitate it, I am now forced to take a week off," she said on her Facebook page.
The 33-year-old American won her sixth Wimbledon title earlier this month and will defend her title in Stanford on August 3. Additionally, she will play in the Toronto tournament the following week and the US Open, starting on August 31.
