Panamericanos: World Champion Fernando Gaviria Wins Gold in Omnium

In the Panamericanos, the World Champion dominates. This is what Colombian cyclist Fernando Gaviria made known after winning the gold medal in the omnium event with 245 points in the overall classification. Mexican Ignacio Prado took the silver and Brazilian Gideoni Rodrigues won the bronze.

Gaviria Shines on Day Two

The Antioquia native did not disappoint in the second day's events. He confidently prevailed in the morning sessions, winning the kilometer and the flying lap. In the evening, he confirmed his favoritism with 61 points in the points race.

In the kilometer event, he recorded the best time with 1 minute 3 seconds and 824 hundredths. Argentine Mauro Richeze and Canadian Remi Pelletier finished second and third, respectively.

After this event, the Colombian was already leading the overall standings with 144 points. Then came the flying lap, where he had the last turn due to his top position.

Chilean Cristopher Mancilla and local rider Pelletier set the pace with two good times: 13.644 for the former and 13.480 for the latter. Their hopes grew when Gaviria took his turn and lost a few seconds at the start.

But the Antioquia native regained his rhythm and finished strong. He recorded a time of 13.433, reaffirming his first place and securing a well-positioned spot with 184 points for the final event of the day, the points race.

First Events

Gaviria began his omnium participation with the scratch event. After a distance of 15 kilometers, he finished with a score of minus one lap lost, placing seventh in the competition.

An hour later, he had to face the individual pursuit, one of his specialties. He completed this event with a time of 4 minutes 28 seconds and 097 hundredths. The winner in this discipline was Canadian Remi Pelletier, with Brazilian Gideoni Rodrigues coming in second. In the final event (elimination), Gaviria took first place, surpassing Rodrigues. He ended the day in second position overall.

Gaviria became the omnium world champion in the Paris Championship held in February, with a score of 205, which earned him the gold medal.
