Only one season
This is how long (or how much they have endured) Lance Stephenson lasted in Charlotte. The 24-year-old shooting guard has been traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for power forward Spencer Hawes and small forward Matt Barnes. The operation, according to ESPN, is similar to the proposed trade earlier this season before the trade deadline, which never materialized.
Stephenson arrives in Los Angeles after a forgettable season with the Hornets
Signed as a free agent last season with a good contract (27.4 million for three years), the shooting guard arrived in North Carolina with a star label. His last year with the Pacers was his definitive leap in the NBA with a very suggestive style, full of crossovers that enchanted the Indiana fans, who saw their team reach the Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost to LeBron James' last project in the Miami Heat.
Stephenson has thanked the city of Charlotte, the team, and the fans through Twitter. His profile picture has already been edited to appear dressed in his new team's jersey:
With this move, the Los Angeles team finds a man capable of guaranteeing (if he returns to his essence) the position of Chris Paul when he is not on the court (he has the ability to bring the ball up and initiate offensive plays), as well as adding another offensive weapon to compete again in the Western Conference. His arrival is not a risk. Stephenson is in his last guaranteed year of contract (9 million) and if he does not meet expectations, the Clippers could easily get rid of him. But if he does his job well, the team could automatically renew him, as his contract has a Team Option for 9.4.
Meanwhile, Michael Jordan's franchise adds two veteran players
to a roster with potential, which disappointed this season by not making the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Spencer Hawes (27 years old and 8 seasons in the NBA), isolated on the bench by Doc Rivers during the playoffs, will bolster the interior play alongside Al Jefferson, Cody Zeller, Noah Vonleh, and Marvin Williams. Biyombo -qualified offer- and Maxiell -end of contract- still have to resolve their future. The power forward has three years left, two of them guaranteed (5.5 and 5.7) and a Player Option for the last year (6).
Meanwhile, Matt Barnes (35 years old and 12 seasons in the League) will not only bring experience, but also quality in the perimeter play, where the Hornets are very weak (finishing last in three-point percentage this year with 31.8%) in a fundamental aspect to compete head-to-head with the titans of the East. The small forward will also provide good defensive minutes with a volatile character capable of the best and worst on the court. His 3.5 million contract expires in the summer of 2016.
