The Julio César Chávez González Boxing Gym

The boxing gym at the Morelos sports complex, in the heart of Tepito, has a new name, now it is "Julio César Chávez González".

Accompanied by the delegate chief in Cuauhtémoc, Ricardo Monreal, JC was welcomed by hundreds of people, mostly children, outside the sports complex and they showered confetti and streamers in honor of the fighter who used to paralyze the entire country when he fought.

"I am where great champions emerged, including my idol, Rubén Olivares, and where I know that great champions will continue to emerge, better than El Púas or me," Chávez declared.

Escorted by the delegate, the former champion toured the gym until he reached the place where more than 50 children and young people were hitting the equipment, in order to show off in front of him.

Striving to stand out among the rest of those who were practicing, María, a girl no older than 15, threw gloves in front of the former fighter; she had to shine, so she boxed on her feet and threw her best punches, because "after all, someone like him doesn't come every day," the young girl affirmed.

After seeing how they worked, Chávez stepped into the ring to unveil the plaque and remind young people that sports are a great tool to avoid drug-related problems.

"Boxing will help, I know that this place has great potential for producing many many boxers, better than El Púas, Ratón Macías or me. Stay away from drugs, as they are not the answer," Chávez Carrasco concluded, who did not stop smiling throughout the event, while observing the displays of affection from those who eagerly waited for hours for him to sign a glove or a notebook, because "we have to take advantage," said one of the attendees.
