The four-time world champion Germany sealed their ticket to the 2022 World Cup this Monday, becoming the first nation to do so through the qualifying phase, by defeating North Macedonia (4-0) and benefiting from Armenia's defeat in Romania (1-0).
Goals from Kei Havertz (50), Timo Werner with a brace (70, 73), and young Jamal Musiala (84) leave Hansi Flick's 'Mannschaft' with 21 points in Group J, compared to Romania's 13 and North Macedonia and Armenia's 12, who will no longer be able to catch them with two games left.
"This early qualification will strengthen our confidence in ourselves. Obviously, we now want to be world champions," said Havertz to RTL Germany.
The only team that had secured their place in the World Cup so far was Qatar, as the host country.
This qualification of Germany - the 18th consecutive one since 1954 for the final phase of a World Cup - in an easy group, is not a surprise.
In the last edition, the 'Mannschaft' had secured their ticket to Russia 2018 after winning all their ten games, only to be eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup.
