River Plate hugged the epic by defeating Independiente Santa Fe 2-1 in the Copa Libertadores with an improvised goalkeeper, Enzo Pérez, and without any substitutes due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the squad that affected twenty players.
River Plate fans are already comparing this feat with the Copa Libertadores title that River achieved against their archrival Boca Juniors in Madrid in 2018, in both cases under the command of Gallardo.
Enzo Pérez, an experienced 35-year-old midfielder who has played in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, received Gallardo's blessing to go to the goal and fulfilled his improvised role with flying colors.
All his teammates went to embrace the new River Plate idol, a pedestal that only a few like Gallardo, the Uruguayan former player Enzo Francescoli, and the 1978 World Cup champion with Argentina, Norberto Alonso, can occupy.
The four goalkeepers registered in the Copa Libertadores list are among those infected with COVID-19, and River Plate was unable to add another one in that position, as well as add new outfield players, so they did not have a bench of substitutes.
We have a goalkeeper for the Copa América.
