The organization referred to the rumors of cancelation of the sports event, which has been postponed from July 2020 to the same month in 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

World Health Organization (WHO) avoids referring to the alleged cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics, postponed from July 2020 to the same month in 2021; however, it pointed out that organizers must consider the risks to make a decision amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

"We would like the Olympics to be held as a symbol that our world is coming together again, but after what we faced last year, a decision will have to be made based on the risk," said WHO Health Emergencies Director Mike Ryan at a press conference today.

In addition, he emphasized that the International Olympic Committee, as well as the Japanese Government, with advice from WHO, "are constantly weighing those risks." Ryan assured that in this type of events they do not have the authority to order a cancellation, only to advise.

CONFIDENCE IN JAPAN

The Irishman indicated that things continue to be complicated in many countries, but "we have confidence in Japan, which has been one of the governments that has achieved better ways to control the disease."
