Tennis Player Dominic Thiem Talks about the US Open and Grand Slam Tournaments

"It has been very rigorous. From what I have learned, in Paris (Roland Garros September 21 to October 11) it will be the same," said the world number three in a press conference in Vienna upon his return from the United States.

"But it must be this way. Tennis Grand Slam tournaments are among the major sporting events, and there are so many people involved that it must be covered well, it must be strict," the player pointed out.

Thiem indicated that, apart from a case of coronavirus, the competition in New York went perfectly and he believes that it should serve as a model for other tournaments.

The tennis player recounted that every three days they had to get tested for coronavirus, there was a strict policy of mandatory use of masks, and even in the hotel, the limits of the spaces to move around were marked exactly.

Regarding his first Grand Slam victory, Thiem insisted that he has achieved the biggest goal of his career, and he acknowledged that during the agonizing final against the German Alexander Zverev, he had problems in his thigh due to nerves.

"I hope that now that I have achieved this great triumph, I can approach the major tournaments more relaxed and perhaps be able to play better," the tennis player admitted.

Among those who have congratulated the player for his victory are the world number one, Novak Djokovic, and the number two, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who are now only separated by 725 points.

"It is a huge honor," said Thiem, who assured that he has not yet had time to assimilate his victory and has not stopped to think about the possibility of someday leading the ATP ranking.
