Peru to host Online World Youth Weightlifting Championship

Following the great success of the organization of the Grand Prix 2019, Peru will host online the 2020 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Youth Championship. The event, which was originally scheduled to take place from November 11th to 18th in person, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peru, which successfully organized an IWF Grand Prix last November, will host the online event. The details will be announced soon by the world governing body and has the full support of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD).

With very few international qualifying competitions still on the 2020 calendar, there is a possibility that there will be no more live weightlifting events until next year.

Renzo Manyari, president of the Peruvian Weightlifting Sports Federation, will be the key organizer of the World Youth Cup. "It's a matter of coordination with the IWF, and I am grateful for their support," he said.

"I am waiting for the IWF's decision on the format, but it would be ideal if it were similar to the online Pan American Cup since we are familiar with the system."

The historic event in July, reported here by insidethegames, featured athletes from 15 nations competing in local venues in their hometowns. Their efforts were livestreamed and the event was organized from Peru by the Pan American Weightlifting Federation and sponsored by the Chinese equipment manufacturer, ZKC.

"I am confident that we will be able to offer the world an online competition that will allow us to experience a new way of living our sport and a new level of excellence in event organization," said Manyari. Andina
