Tanzania became the first African country to resume its football championship this weekend after being suspended in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Saturday, the Young Africans, 22-time champions of Tanzania, beat Mwadui 1-0, while Coastal Union and Namungo drew 2-2.

These two matches were the first to be played in three months in this East African country. They have been played under strict health protocols.

Children and elderly people, considered the most vulnerable to COVID-19, cannot enter the stadiums.

The pandemic has resulted in 225,126 confirmed cases and 6,051 deaths in Africa, according to figures published on Saturday by the African Union's center for disease control and prevention (CDC).

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, all African championships have been suspended, with the exception of Burundi, where football was not interrupted. AFP
