Peruvian League's Return Plan

In that video conference, the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) delivered to the clubs the protocols approved by the authorities with the different phases that the teams must comply with in order to gradually resume activity and prevent COVID-19 infections among their players.

The designed protocol is similar to the one followed by the German or Spanish league. Thus, players will start training individually, then in small groups, and finally the whole team will exercise together.

Prior to returning to training, the footballers must undergo molecular screening tests (PCR) for COVID-19 and on the same day of the first training, another rapid test. Players who test positive must undergo a complete clinical examination and isolate themselves until they recover.

The main novelty compared to other countries is that all matches will be played in a centralized manner in Lima to avoid the constant travel that teams would normally make.

The Peruvian league was suspended in mid-March when the general and mandatory quarantine was decreed. Until then, only six rounds of the Apertura Tournament had been played.

The idea is to play the remaining thirteen rounds of the Apertura and then play the Clausura with a different format, since the 20 teams will be divided into 2 groups of 10. The top teams from each group will play a final to decide the champion.

To determine the league champion, there will be playoffs with semifinals and a final, involving the champions of the Apertura and Clausura and the two other teams with the most points in the season's overall standings.

These four teams will earn a spot each to play in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores, while the next best-placed teams in the overall standings will participate in the Copa Sudamericana.

Furthermore, the bottom four clubs will be relegated if the second division and the Copa Peru can be held. If neither of them can be played, only two teams will be relegated, which will reduce the first division from 20 teams to 18, unlike this year.

A total of 224 matches will be played, including 221 from the 23 pending rounds and the three final elimination matches for the national title.
