Eight players from the Santos Laguna club, from the Mexican first division, have tested positive for the coronavirus just as the Liga MX is expected to decide whether to cancel or resume the Clausura-2020 tournament. Among the infected players would be, according to reports from the Mexican press, the Ecuadorian winger Erik Castillo, who before joining the Santos played for Xolos de Tijuana and Barcelona Sporting Club.
It was also reported from Mexico that Ayrton Preciado was another infected player, however, the agency representing the player stated that his test came back negative.
After Santos Club carried out the COVID-19 tests to its entire squad, Ayrton Preciado's result was: NEGATIVE
"As a result of the medical studies conducted by Santos Club this week: eight players tested positive for Covid-19," the Liga MX reported on Wednesday in a statement.
Neither the Liga MX nor Santos have revealed the identities of the eight players yet, but the statement specified that they are all "asymptomatic" and "will be constantly monitored following the protocols established by the Secretariat of Health of the Federal Government."
Before this announcement, two cases of coronavirus had been identified in the Mexican first division in March, those of Enrique Bonilla, president of the Liga MX, and Alberto Marrero, president of Atlético San Luis Club. Both have recovered from the disease.
The leaders of Liga MX postponed the meeting this Wednesday in which they were supposed to decide on the resolution of the Clausura-2020 tournament, which was canceled on March 15 after 10 rounds were played; there were seven rounds of the regular phase and the playoffs left.
This week, in addition to Santos, other teams such as Guadalajara and Monterrey reported that their squads underwent medical examinations to detect possible cases of coronavirus.
The 'Rayados' of Monterrey announced that all their players are healthy. (D)
