The Portuguese football league announced on Tuesday that the 2019-20 season will resume on June 4, instead of the last weekend of May, the date that the government had advanced in its de-escalation plan.

In a statement, the organization explained that this is the agreed-upon date to ensure that the conditions are optimal and the safety of the players and refereeing staff is maximized upon the return of the championship.

The organization's statement comes two days after the suggested measures for the return of football were known: players in quarantine for the duration of the competition, two tests in the 48 hours prior to the match, closed-door matches with limited movement of spectators outside the stadiums. Regarding the latter, it will be in a reduced number and the scenarios have not yet been defined.

Thus, clubs will have about a month to prepare for the return to competition, as most teams have been training individually since last week, waiting for the situation to continue improving in order to resume collective training.

The Liga Nos will be played with 10 rounds left to play, where Porto is the leader with 60 points, just one point ahead of Benfica.
