Kris Meeke wins Rally Guanajuato Mexico 2017
British driver Kris Meeke overcame a spectacular rollover in the final stage of Derramadero to claim his first victory of the season in the World Rally Championship (WRC). After three demanding days, Meeke managed to secure the win, but not without adding some excitement to it. He almost threw away the victory when he rolled his car in the last curves of the 21.94-kilometer SS19 stage.
However, he was able to recover by getting back on the road with the help of the spectators who were there to witness the thrilling off-road race. Meeke rejoined the race and lost the least amount of time possible. His teammates and rivals, who had already finished the race, couldn't believe what they were seeing.
Nevertheless, Meeke made it to the finish line with a 13.8-second lead over French driver Sebastien Ogier. This victory makes Meeke the third winner of the season in the three races held so far. Ogier and Finnish driver Jari-Matti Latvala had previously won the other two races.
Unfortunately, Latvala faced braking issues and a blown tire on Saturday, which dropped him to sixth place with a 4 minutes and 40 seconds difference from the leader. Belgian driver Thierry Neuville, representing Hyundai, secured the third place, giving the manufacturer its first podium of the year. Ott Tanak from Estonia finished outside the podium in fourth place, while Hayden Paddon from New Zealand finished fifth.
