Nico Rosberg's chances of being crowned champion
Although the possibilities of Nico Rosberg being crowned champion of the 2016 season in the Mexican GP are high, Spanish driver Carlos Sainz does not take the outcome for granted.
"I think the championship will be decided in Abu Dhabi. Because I believe (Lewis) Hamilton still has opportunities. It is true that Rosberg has a clear advantage, but it is true that championships must be fought until they are won," said Toro Rosso driver in an interview, who yesterday attended the Autonomous University of Mexico for a promotional event.
However, the 22-year-old Spaniard acknowledged that the advantage heading into the end of the season lies with the German driver.
"Mercedes has an overwhelming dominance over the entire grid that is not helping F1. The German team has great knowledge and in order to make the category more competitive, a rule change is necessary to turn the tables," he analyzed.
With the motivation generated by his sixth place in the Austin Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz explained that he aims to finish the year strongly in order to position himself for 2017.
"That result motivated me a lot, but Austin is already in the past, I have to focus on Mexico. Knowing that it will be difficult to repeat," he added.
Regarding his future, he assured that 2017 will be crucial to continue with the plan he outlined, leaving the development teams to move up to the front line:
"2017 has to be good, to open all possible doors for me for 2018. My number one goal is to be a Red Bull driver, but if Red Bull decides to keep the door closed and trust in their two drivers, then a decision will have to be made if it is positive to go to any other team," he revealed.
It's good to be back
Carlos Sainz has unfinished business with the Mexican GP, he says he wants to get rid of that bad taste in his mouth from last year, as they learned from their mistakes.
"Last year we had much better pace, but it didn't work out for us. I come here to see what I can do this year. But without a doubt, I arrive very motivated because Mexico was great news for F1 to see so many fans and the atmosphere is something super different from what we experience at the rest of the circuits," said the Spanish driver who said he is anxious to hit the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.
