Kenyan athletes conquer Mexico City Marathon with a photo finish.

Today the 34th edition of the Mexico City Marathon took place, where Kenyan Emmanuel Mnangat and Lithuanian Diana Lobacevske were the absolute winners in their respective categories.

At six in the morning, approximately 35,000 participants started arriving for the 42-kilometer race, with the Hemiciclo a Juárez as the starting point. At 06:40, the competition began with the first group, which included the categories of wheelchairs, blind, and visually impaired athletes, as Horacio de la Vega, the head of Indeporte, fired the starting shot.

Twenty minutes later, the women's elite category, which included the best times recorded during the year, started. Among them was Diana Lobacevske from Lithuania, who climbed to the top of the podium in the 34th edition of the Mexico City Marathon.

Prior to the start of the men's elite category and the other competitors, the Mexican National Anthem was played. At 07:20, the marathon started with the gunshot at the starting line.

The people who came to support their family members, friends, or partners created a great barrier, providing words of encouragement to each of the marathoners as they began their journey along Paseo de la Reforma Avenue, continuing their route through the streets of Polanco.

The fans never stopped supporting along the 42-kilometer circuit, with banners and cheers visible and audible from the Hemiciclo a Juárez to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Stadium, where the finish line was located.

Throughout the competition, the Kenyans remained at the front of their peloton, while Diana from Lithuania separated from her group at kilometer 26.

The most emotional moment was experienced in the final straight at Ciudad Universitaria Stadium, when Emmanuel Mnangat and Isaac Kemboi closed with a photo finish time of 02:19:32, with Emmanuel becoming the 14th Kenyan to conquer this Marathon. Twenty seconds later, his compatriot Rodgers Ondati arrived, achieving the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions in the competition.

In the women's category, Diana Lobacevske crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 02:40:36, followed by Ethiopian Sheware Amare with 02:43:22, who couldn't defend her title from the 2015 edition. In third place was Peruvian Karina Villazana with 02:43:55.

The winner of the wheelchair category was Martín Velasco, a resident of Mexico City.

The awards ceremony was led by the Head of the Government of Mexico City, Miguel Ángel Mancera, and the rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Enrique Graue.

The winners of the 42 kilometers received a prize of half a million pesos, while the second place received 250,000 pesos, and the third place received 125,000 pesos.
