Despite starting in ninth place at the beginning of the race, Max Verstappen achieved his third victory of the season at the Miami Grand Prix 2023. 'Checo' Pérez and Fernando Alonso completed the podium.

Max Verstappen, Dutch driver for Red Bull, increased his lead in the Formula One World Championship by winning the 2023 Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, May 7th. This race, the fifth of the season, took place on a circuit built around the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. On the other hand, Mexican Sergio 'Checo' Pérez and Spanish Fernando Alonso finished second and third respectively.

Verstappen, 25 years old and looking for his third consecutive title, obtained his 38th victory in F1 and the third of this season, after a great performance from the ninth position on the grid. The Dutchman led the race until crossing the finish line in first place, followed by Pérez, his teammate, thus achieving Red Bull's fourth double of the year.

In that line, and after Alonso, the other Spaniard, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) finished in fifth position, behind British George Russell (Mercedes). Seven-time English world champion Lewis Hamilton, also from Mercedes, finished sixth, just ahead of Monegasque Charles Leclerc, Sainz's teammate at Ferrari.

The two Frenchmen from Alpine, Gasly and Ocon, finished eighth and ninth; and Danish Magnussen (Haas) captured the last point at stake, finishing tenth. Verstappen, who repeated last year's triumph and also set the fastest lap, now leads the World Championship with 119 points, fourteen more than 'Checo'. The double world champion from Asturias is third, with 75 points.

How they arrive at the 2023 Miami GP race

For many years we had not seen a season start with an absolute dominance by a team, but not with one driver, but with two who have taken turns in first place on the podium in race after race. We are talking about the Red Bull team, which has Max Verstappen (defending champion and last winner of the Miami GP) and Mexican Sergio 'Checo' Pérez as winners of the 4 previous races (2 victories for each).

The advantage is slightly favorable for Max Verstappen, who in the 4 races has managed to enter the podium and has accumulated a total of 93 points so far, while Checo Pérez has won 2 of the 4 races, but only reached the podium in 3 of them, due to an incident in the Australian GP that placed him in sixth place at the end of the race, and for now, the Mexican has 87 points in the overall annual standings. Completing the top 3 with 60 points, which resulted from 3 third places, is Fernando Alonso, who will seek to remove the thorn of not having won any of the 4 circuits yet.
