The withdrawal of support for 147 athletes who were part of the Athlete Support Program (PAD) of the Peruvian Institute of Sport (IPD) provoked protests from several athletes through social media. Athlete Paola Mautino and taekwondo athlete Julissa Diez Canseco were two of the affected athletes who expressed their dissatisfaction with the measure.
Amidst the controversial decision and debates on the issue, IPD President Sebastian Suito spoke out in an interview with Radio Programas del Peru and stated that the situation "is what causes my concern" and indicated that he was unaware "of the decision in two ways".
"First, I was not informed about the withdrawal of these 147 athletes, and second, it does not seem right to me that athletes who may have achievements that are more interesting or close to achieving achievements are removed from the support they receive through the program (PAD), which is merit-based and given to those who win medals or are close to winning them," he explained.
"It was a unilateral decision, caused by the director (of the National Directorate of Affiliated Sports, Victor Aspillaga)," Suito added.
On the other hand, the president mentioned that he took action when he learned about the measure. "I became aware of this situation on Monday. I requested to meet with all the affected athletes to inform them that my first decision is the review of each of their cases. I wanted to hear their opinions, listen to them, and understand their concerns," he said.
Likewise, Suito referred to the PAD program. "Every month, athletes are added and removed. Generally, the maximum number of athletes that are removed is around 25. This corresponds to achievements, medals, or advancements in their performances," he added.
