The Spanish driver Joan 'Nani' Roma said goodbye to the Rally Dakar 2018 after suffering a serious accident when he had only 500 meters left to finish the third stage between Pisco and San Juan de Marcona.
The organization posted a message on their official Twitter account confirming that the renowned driver, who was driving a Mini X-Raid in the race, will not participate in the fourth stage San Juan de Marcona - San Juan de Marcona. "Nani Roma will not participate in the fourth stage after his accident yesterday. Get well soon, Nani!", says the message.
The condition of Nani Roma
Sources close to his Mini team confirmed to Efe that Roma was taken to a clinic in Lima where he is doing well and without any broken bones, but with a lot of muscle pain in his back, especially in the shoulder area after the accident in the Peruvian dunes. They added that the doctors will decide today if they discharge him or if he remains one more day for his full recovery.
The members reported that the car crossed a trench that apparently was not marked in the roadbook when it was going at a high speed down a dune slope, causing it to roll over several times. Despite this, Roma recovered and completed the timed segment, but the doctors decided to evacuate him in a helicopter to Pisco, and from there in a plane to Lima, without being able to complete the remaining 208 kilometers of liaison stage to the camp located in San Juan de Marcona.
