Fernando Alonso to continue with McLaren for another season

The Spanish driver Fernando Alonso, Formula One World Champion in 2005 and 2006 with Renault, announced through a team video his continuity as a McLaren driver for another season.

Alonso, 36 years old and with 32 victories in F1 - the sixth best historical record -, will thus compete in his seventeenth season in the top category of motorsport, where he hopes to have a competitive car after the agreement of Renault to supply engines to the English team, leaving behind the last three years with Honda, in which the results fell short of expectations.

Since early afternoon in Europe, the Woking team published videos in which the continuity of the Asturian double world champion could be seen, as different members of McLaren, such as Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne and French team boss Eric Boullier, perfected their Spanish.

Before the last of these videos, Alonso himself could be seen saying, "See you next year". Alonso made his F1 debut in 2001 with Minardi; and, after a year as a test driver, he took the wheel of a Renault in 2003, the season in which he achieved his first victory in Hungary, before winning a title in 2005 that he renewed the following year.

In 2007, he experienced his first stint at McLaren, where he coincided with the then debutant Englishman Lewis Hamilton, with whom he had a relationship that was clearly in need of improvement. In 2008 and 2009, he returned to being a driver at Renault, before signing with Ferrari, the team where he competed for the following five seasons, before returning to the Woking team in 2015.
