Javier Carvallo, director of the Mexico City Marathon, confirmed that the 2017 edition will have the silver certification that places it as the best in Latin America.

XXXV edition of the Mexico City Marathon celebrated last weekend

Over the past weekend, the XXXV edition of the Mexico City Marathon was celebrated, a competition that has been climbing positions in recent years, to the point of being considered the ninth most important in the world.

With the bronze certification granted by the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations), the race under the direction of athlete and marathoner Javier Carvallo, undertook this year's challenge with the mission of surpassing what was done in previous editions.

"It is truly a fantastic experience to be behind this great event, with 40 thousand runners and over 300 thousand people on the streets supporting", said Javier Carvallo to La Afición in response to this year's turnout.

The goals were high, as achieving the bronze certification took a long time and aspiring to the silver category depended on a great organization, which, according to Carvallo, is "almost confirmed".

"Regarding the search for the silver certification from the IAAF, it is almost confirmed that we obtained it, we have to wait for a paperwork process that comes after the race and we are working on it, but fortunately everything points, after the meeting I had with the IAAF's observer who came from Europe, that we will obtain this silver certification, which makes us the best marathon in Latin America", shared the director.

Although official figures of runners and number of finishers (runners who completed the course) are not yet available, Javier is confident that last year's edition was surpassed by far, which is also "a fulfilled goal".

"We already have some preliminary data, but we are talking about almost 30 thousand who started the race and of those who finished we have a similar number; however, we have the timing team, purifying the database to have only those who started and finished the race, which are the ones we have to present to the international instances, which are the ones that give us the endorsement and recognition", he pointed out.

GOING FOR GOLD

Although now the most important thing for Javier Carvallo's team at the Mexico City Marathon is to work on the silver achieved, they are already working to achieve the gold category in the coming years.

"For now, it is definitely the silver, we have to consolidate the silver and with that as a basis, we can seek the gold in the future."

NO INJURIES

Despite the large number of medical interventions that took place during the 42-kilometer journey, Javier Carvallo commented that only two runners ended up in the hospital and have already been discharged.

"We had a total of 4,600 incidents throughout the entire route, of these, in quotes, all were minor attentions and we had only two transfers to the hospital, one Mexican and one New Zealander, both cases were not extremely serious, but it was convenient to take them by ambulance; both have already been released from the hospital, so we could say that it was injury-free in this edition of the Marathon", he emphasized.
