Andrés Pérez Maillar Conquers Mount Kilimanjaro
On August 11th, 13-year-old Andrés Pérez Maillar managed to conquer Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, becoming one of the youngest climbers to reach its summit.
During a seven-day and six-night trek, the young mountaineer successfully reached the 5,895-meter summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, East Africa.
To conquer the mountain, which is considered one of the tallest volcanoes in the world, Andrés only needed mountaineering clothing, climbing poles, and a 20-liter backpack. His route included a vertical ascent of 4,100 meters and a distance of 76 kilometers.
The only setback Andrés Pérez Maillar experienced while climbing the 'roof' of Africa was when his father had to descend 3,100 meters from the last campsite to recover from altitude sickness.
Andrés Pérez Maillar's passion for mountaineering began at the age of four when he climbed the Xitle volcano, located at the foot of Ajusco, in the company of his father. Since then, Andrés, who is currently in his second year of secondary school, has reached the summits of Mexico's most important mountains, including the Iztaccíhuatl and the highest point in the country, Pico de Orizaba.
