Getafe secures promotion to Spanish first division
Getafe achieved their promotion to the Spanish first division on Saturday, just one year after relegation. They defeated Tenerife 3-1 in the second leg of the promotion playoff final, after trailing 1-0 in the first leg.
This advantage proved insufficient for Tenerife as Getafe had a strong start to the match.
Argentine Alejandro Faurlín (minute 9) and Daniel Pacheco (13) gave Getafe an early lead.
Tenerife had hopes when Honduran Anthony Lozano reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 17th minute, putting them back in the race for promotion. However, Pacheco (37) scored again to seal the victory for Getafe, sparking celebrations at the Coliseum in the southern outskirts of Madrid.
In the second half, the score remained unchanged and Getafe, who finished third in the second division, secured promotion alongside Levante (1st) and Girona (2nd) who secured automatic promotion.
On the other hand, Tenerife will not be able to return to the top division, which they last left in 2010. They even dropped to the third tier (Second B) a year later and played there for two seasons.
Getafe had been relegated to the second division a year ago after twelve seasons in the top flight.
In the 2017-2018 season, there will be four teams from Madrid in the first division, including Getafe, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Leganes.
Getafe and Tenerife reached the promotion playoff final by eliminating Huesca and Cadiz in the semifinals, respectively.
