GREEEN BAY, Wis. (WMTV) - Cuba City beat McDonell Catholic 48-45 in the WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament Semifinals.
In a close game where the largest lead was just five points, the game came down to the final seconds. Tied at 45 with under ten seconds to go, the Cubans had a huge block on freshman Ella May Cooper that fell into the hands of sophomore Ashley Rowe, who had a runner in the paint to go up two. The Cubans added a free throw to bring the score to 48.
“There’s a whole lot of girls on this team when the ball is in their hands, they make a play and we feel pretty good,” Cuba City head coach Jason Derby said. “So, we trust our kids to go make a play and she went and made a play and this time we were fortunate that it happened to work out and if it wouldn’t’ve, it wouldn’t’ve changed the fact it was a pretty good play.”
This is Cuba City’s 17th appearance in the State tournament, the most in Wisconsin girls basketball.
Junior guard Olivia Olson lead all scorers with 22 points.
The Cubans look to add to their already full trophy case on Saturday when they take on no.1 seed Laconia for the Division IV state title Saturday.
