The Georgia State Panthers had their appetizer on Tuesday and will get a main course when they host the Northeastern Huskies on Friday afternoon in Atlanta. The Panthers, who have been to three NCAA Tournaments since 2015, opened their season with a 97-37 home rout of NAIA Brewton-Parker College. The Huskies, who have made the NCAA's twice since 2015 as Colonial Athletic Conference champs, tipped off Tuesday against Division I Colgate and lost 65-58 on the road. The teams were regular opponents in the CAA from 2005-13 but haven't met since the Panthers bolted for the Sun Belt so the GSU football team could move up to the FBS level.

Why the Panthers can cover
Georgia State has every starter back from the Sun Belt's highest-scoring team last season. The Panthers averaged 80.3 points, and all five averaged double figures. Key forward Eliel Nsoseme is out indefinitely with a knee injury, but star guard Corey Allen leads the way and gets a lot of help from Kane Williams, Justin Roberts and Jalen Thomas. Ja'Heim Hudson and Nelson Phillips help fill the void left by Nsoseme's injury. Allen led the team at 15 points per game last season, followed by Roberts (13.2), Williams (12.9), Nsoseme (11.9) and Thomas (10.1).
It all looked familiar Tuesday night as Allen scored a team-high 20 points, Roberts added 19 and Phillips had 15. Roberts had six steals and Phillips had five as GSU had 21 as a team, and it blocked seven shots. Williams had 11 points and seven assists, while Thomas had a team-high six rebounds and blocked three shots. GSU led the Sun Belt in shooting percentage (46.8) and was third in opponent percentage (41.3) last season. Allen led the conference in 3-point shooting at 42.5 percent, and Roberts was the Sun Belt leader in assist/turnover ratio at 2.3.
Why the Huskies can cover
Northeastern had a tougher foe in its opener, and it led at halftime before Colgate caught fire and made 48 percent of its shots in the second half. Jahmyl Telfort led the offensive effort on Tuesday with 17 points, while Chris Doherty had a career-best 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Shaquille Walters also reached double digits with 10 points and had seven boards, all on the defensive end. Walter was seventh in the CAA in rebounding last season, averaging 6.6 per game, and he averaged 10.5 points while Telfort scored 11.8 in 2020-21.
